How Understanding Program Design Helps You Reach Your Goals
When you follow any exercise program, you should not be just going through a list of movements, you should be following a carefully designed plan meant to help you reach your goals safely, efficiently, and with lasting change.
Understanding the “why” a program is structured the way it is can make you a more informed, engaged, and successful participant in your own progress.
Knowing the reasoning behind exercise choices, progressions, and adjustments helps you become more aware of your body, make smarter decisions, and build confidence in your training.
Drawing from 17 years of experience, I’ve identified five of the most common pitfalls people make when creating their own exercise routines.

1️. Not Understanding How the Body Works
Many people jump into exercises without understanding how muscles and joints interact together, or how movement patterns (biomechanics) affect overall performance and safety. This often leads to poor form, compensation, or possible injury.
What to know: Quality programming considers how each exercise fits your body’s anatomy. Select exercises that not only work the right muscles but also promote balanced movement and joint health. Paying attention to form cues or corrections is about improving how you move, not just completing reps.
2️. Following Someone Else’s Program
Not all workouts are created equal, and what works for one person may be completely wrong for another. Generic programs often called “pre-canned”, fail to consider your unique needs, fitness history, or specific goals.
What to know: A good program is personalized. Select workouts based on your fitness level, goals, limitations, and strengths. Understanding this helps you appreciate why certain exercises or progressions are included and why they’re chosen specifically to support your journey, not just copied from someone else’s success.
3️. Ignoring All Directions of Movement
We are designed to move in all directions; however, most people focus only on forward-and-backward motions (like running, squats, or biceps curls) and leave out important side-to-side or rotational movements. This will create muscle imbalances and limit overall function.
What to know: A well-rounded program challenges your body in all directions- forward, backward, sideways, and twisting. These movements improve balance, coordination, and resilience, helping you perform better in daily life and reduce risk of injury.
4️. Not Having Exercise Modifications Ready
We tend to follow programs even if the exercises don’t feel right, or your energy levels vary from session to session. Without built-in flexibility, a rigid program can either push you too hard or hold you back with injury.
What to know: A quality program includes options to adjust exercises based on how you’re feeling that day- physically and mentally. If something feels off, or if you’re ready for a bigger challenge, adjust the programing that can offer alternatives that keep you progressing safely and effectively.
5️. Skipping Take-Home Exercises
Progress isn’t just about the time you spend in a training session at the gym. Progress is also shaped by what you do between sessions. Without a weekly plan, it’s easy to lose consistency or miss out on small daily movements that support your goals.
What to know: Your “take-home” program should provide simple, targeted take home routines like stretching, light cardio, or mobility exercises which helps support your main program. These small, manageable tasks keep you moving forward and help maintain your momentum between workouts.
